IJMC - Y2K Bit Us Hard
While the Y2K rollover pretty much passed through the world like a soft
breeze, here at the International Junk Mail Clearinghouse Headquarters,
we were scurrying fast as we put our server to its first production run.
In a prediction failure, we forgot to check our daily tracking system for
both Y2K *and* compatibility testing! While the tracking system for the
new year was verified Y2K compliant, imagine our concern when our first
attempt with the new system failing miserably due to compatibility
issues! Yes, horror-of-horrors, the new, "M.C.Escher 366-Day Calendar for
2000" uses 1 page per weekend! How would we know for sure that we had
sent out a post on a Sunday if we tore off the Saturday/Sunday joint
page? How would we be sure we had actually sent a Saturday post if the
page was still there, waiting for Sunday to roll around? Imagine our
dismay at failing our readers their 365 (366 this leap year) posts a year
(working on the timeliness issue still...)? Well, we scurried and we
scampered, running errantly looking for the backup tracking system. Lo
and behold, we found it...so the tracking system was immediately updated
to "The OFFICIAL Guiness book of Records Calendar 2000"! Remember, you
too should always have a backup! You never know when the primary system
will fail! -dave
P.S. All joking aside, I did find one y2k issue in the software I use for
statistics management...of course, the updated version I have for the
new server works fine, so I am not going to bother updating it...and I
will let everyone know when the new server goes online. Nothing like dual
hampsters on the treadmills to speed the posts along! I have no idea how
I have made do with only one hampster/treadmill processor for all these
years!
Hi Dave,
Most people are saving December 31st and January 1st newspapers for
historical purposes. They should also save the January 3rd issue since
it will contain the last Peanuts Cartoon.
Hope you had a good new years day!
