IJMC - Association of Computing What?!

I'm neither sure what this group is nor why all these people are saying 
such stupid things at their meeting, but hey, it's good for a laugh. Or 
two, or three, or I'll shaddup now.                               -dave







Some highlights from the Association of Computing Machinery meeting 
in San Jose, CA:

Pattie Maes (MIT Media Lab and godmother of Firefly Technologies)
blasted research on Artificial Intelligence, saying "There are far
more pleasing ways to reproduce human intelligence."

[can't argue with that -- and would enjoy discussing with her this
critical issue concerning the pleasures of reproducing human
intelligence]

Nathan Myhrvold (VP for Applications and Content at Microsoft) claimed
that Microsoft is responsible for all technological advances in
computing as well as the growth of the computing industry economy. He
said that the increasing bloat of Microsoft software is the driving
orce behind Moore's Law. "If we hadn't brought your computer to its
knees, why would you go out and buy a new one?"

Bran Ferran (Executive VP for creative technology and R&D at Walt
Disney) offered a picturesque insight: "Think of your computer like
the toilet. You are trained on both, and facility in using both will
etermine how you are judged by friends."
